Air National Guard Band Program Ends

After eight decades of service to the country and thousands of performances spanning the globe, the Air National Guard band program has come to an end. In 2013, the Air National Guard deactivated six bands leaving bands in Texas, Illinois, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, and California. Five bands remained:

  • Air National Guard Band of the Midwest (566th Air Force Band)
  • Air National Guard Band of the Northeast (567th Air Force Band)
  • Air National Guard Band of the South (530th Air Force Band)
  • Air National Guard Band of the Southwest (531st Air Force Band)
  • Air National Guard Band of the West Coast (562nd Air Force Band)

In April 2023, the Air National Guard announced the remaining bands would be deactivated a year later. On April 1st, 2024, 207 Air National Guard band members will transition into new jobs in the Guard, new careers with active duty bands, new opportunities with the Army Guard bands, and some will be eligible for retirement.

The band positions lost in 2024 will be used for cyber operations and redistributed to all 50 states.

The Air Force Musicians Association (AFMA) is working with former Air National Guard Chief of Bands, Colonel (ret) Jeff Mathews, to invite current and former Guard band members to join AFMA.
